If you have access to a factory level scan tool you could watch the engine control system voltages as you turned the wheel. My FJO simply reads 19. Good luck with it. The intake tract, iacv, throttle body bore and throttle plate can be cleaned with Throttle Body Cleaner spray.
That's where you ought to start looking for a problem. I remembered one time I checked the oil and it was completely dry.
Steve one said it was the transmission and sell it to him than I had the transmission checked and they said it was solid the guy probably just wanted the car. It could be the throttle position sensors bad! Just checking to see if you got the problem solved?
That you have to center it back up for it to start sounds like it is more than likely an actual connector and not a loose wire.

You may also have a problem with an emissions control device, where it has a hard time idling as it is, perhaps your Idle air control valve is at its' limits, do you have a check engine light on, if so, I would definnetly think about getting that checked first, many auto parts houses like Autozone will check the codes for free. When the steering is turned, this switch sends a signal to the engine computer.
